What is it

Hyperhidrosis is an excessive secretion of sweat and manifests itself in a generalized or localized manner.

Generally, the body, under normal conditions, produces about half a liter of sweat per day.
In case of triggering stimuli such as high temperatures (for example in summer), intense physical exertion, stress, and other reasons, the production of sweat can increase considerably, causing in some cases unpleasant situations and unpleasant odors.

Among the most common factors that influence this disorder are environmental and emotional ones.
Other triggers are endocrine stimuli (hyperthyroidism and hypoglycemia), dietary (excessive consumption of foods containing caffeine, capsaicin or spicy and other thermogenic agents), pharmacological (antipyretics, antidepressants, cholinergics and amphetamines) and vegetative (hyperhidrosis caused by nausea, vomiting and pain).

Treatment

In cases where the basic solutions have had no effect (antiperspirants and iontophoresis) or in those cases that you want to solve the problem with a more effective approach, it is possible to do an outpatient treatment with botulinum toxin.

After a thorough examination and excluding cases of secondary hyperhidrosis, the treatment is evaluated with the patient by infiltration of botulinum toxin, injected with a very fine needle, in minimal doses, directly under the skin in the affected area, to solve the problem of excessive sweating.

How it works

Once the botulinum toxin is injected, it acts on the nervous system, inhibiting the nerve impulses responsible for the production of sweat.

In order to maximize the results, on the day of surgery, and not to compromise the treatment, it is necessary to avoid physical activity, exposure to sunlight or UV rays, prolonged sources of heat or exposure to cold (for the next 4 weeks), traumatizing maneuvers, inappropriate detergents and cosmetics. Alcohol intake is not recommended for 10/14 days.

Negotiable zones

The areas that can be treated with essential hyperhidrosis treatment with botulinum toxin are:

  • Palm of the hands
  • Soles of the feet
  • Armpits
  • Back
  • Face
  • Scalp

Results

The results may vary from person to person, generally the problem of hyperhidrosis is completely eliminated.

Normally the timing is quite long, and there is a gradual recovery of the secretory activity of the glands only after 5/9 months (depending on the area and the patient's response to the drug), in many cases 1 treatment per year is sufficient.

Benefits

The problem of excessive sweating has social repercussions (sweat stains, unpleasant odor) and work (such as slippery hands, or slight corrosion of various materials with which you come into contact).

In the social sphere, no longer having problems of hyperhidrosis greatly benefits the self-esteem and improves interpersonal relationships giving self-confidence.

In the workplace improvements are a significant improvement in their ability to work precision, speed of execution, cleanliness and hygiene of the tools used.
